CERT Program of Kirkland, WA

The overall goal of the CERT/KAN Neighborhood Forums will be to focus on Disaster Planning and Emergency Response for each neighborhood.  We will seek to define resource availability, including Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) strength, communication planning, emergency centers, and Points of Distribution (PODs) for use when additional resources can be made available.  Kirkland's Office of Emergency Management (OEM) and Public Safety Committee, along with the CERT steering committee, feel strongly that this goal will be best served with broad community engagement.  Neighborhood Forums are hosted by the CERT Steering Committee Neighborhood Chairperson, and held monthly on a variable schedule in order to provide many different opportunities for community members to participate.

When disaster strikes, would you know how to contact first responders?  What if 9-1-1 is jammed, or phones are down altogether?  What if there was a designated location in your neighborhood where you could go for information, help, and basic services such as power and communication?  Points of Distribution or PODs are such a place.  The Kirkland Office of Emergency Management (OEM), in conjunction with our City Council, is planning to identify PODs for each Kirkland neighborhood.

Valued (CERT, KAN, Community) members were invited to participate in a meeting on Saturday February 28th from 10-11am at Fire Station 22.  Attendees were asked to provide input into what makes a good POD location and what services or resources might be available in their neighborhoods.  Ongoing opportunities to engage in disaster and emergency response planning were also discussed.

Steve Bennett is leading the CERT / KAN Neighborhood Forum.  Please contact him via email (click here) if you would like to participate in this exciting partnership.
