KIRKLAND, Wash. – Kirkland officials are hosting a Grand Opening event on Saturday, May 31, 2014 from 1 to 4 p.m. to celebrate the completion of the Kirkland Justice Center. The new Kirkland Justice Center is located on NE 118th Street, housing both the Kirkland Municipal Court and the Kirkland Police Department. The schedule of events includes: Kirkland Police Department Honor Guard will “Post the Colors,” Mayor Amy Walen will lead the opening remarks, and City officials will cut the ribbon.  Self-guided tours will be available following the opening ceremonies until 4 p.m. where visitors can view special features of the building including the booking area, firing range and crime lab.  Artists Ellen Sollod and Katy Stone will be available to talk with visitors about their interior art.  Staff will have information about services provided by the Court and Police Department including crime prevention, personal safety, jury duty, Teen Traffic Court, and public safety volunteer and education programs.  Police vehicles, including the SWAT Van, will be on display.  Free Child I.D. Kits and light-fare food will be available.   Event information is posted at www.kirklandwa.gov/publicsafetybuilding.

The Kirkland Municipal Court portion includes two large courtrooms, one small courtroom, a spacious lobby, Judge’s chambers, and staff offices. As of June 16, 2014, the new (physical) address for the Kirkland Municipal is 11740 NE 118th Street.  The phone number remains the same at 425-587-3160.

The Police Department portion includes a tactical training area, booking center, corrections facility, firing range, forensic lab and administrative offices.  The multiple purpose room will be available for public use. As of June 9, 2014, the new (physical) address for the Kirkland Police Department is 11750 NE 118th Street.  The business phone number remains the same at 425-587-3400.

The Kirkland Justice Center locates the base for court, police, and corrections services and is centrally located in the Totem Lake Business District in order to serve all residents; including those who joined Kirkland in the 2011 annexation.  The 102,000 square foot building was transformed from a furniture store into an essential public safety facility.  The City purchased the building in 2010 and it was determined that renovating the building was less expensive than designing and constructing a new one. The City is seeking to achieve the Silver designation for the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®) rating system developed by the U.S. Green Building Council.

Although the building was previous named “Public Safety Building,” the City Council approved the name “Kirkland Justice Center.”
